Hey Joshua - just seen your question over on my blog... The simplest answer is that I only use default ps brushes, and then mainly the soft pastel brush in the 'dry media' set. Also try to stay as loose as possible for as long as possible, tightening up of details usually only takes up about 20% of the painting time.
